Why Teenagers Cut and How to Help

I often have counselors ask me for resources to help students who are cutters. I found the following article on the NY Times blog and thought I’d share. It is often very hard for parents and other adults to understand why teenagers cut. For the cutter, however, it is an effective, though dangerous, release of emotions. I hope this article helps you have a clearer understanding of the problem.

Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success - Free Curriculum and Videos

Every time I ask an employer what they are looking for in an employee I get the same answer - "I need them to have the soft skills".

There are many personal skills considered "soft skills". To name a few of these - honesty, communication skills, sense of responsibility, coming to work on time, dressing appropriately, teamwork, good attitude, ambition, and critical thinking.

The US Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) created a resource to help young people gain some of these skills and they called it - "Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success".

"Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success," is a curriculum that includes activities and videos focused on teaching these "soft" or workforce readiness skills to youth, including youth with disabilities. Created as an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills, the curriculum is targeted for youth ages 14 to 21 in both in-school and out-of-school environments.

The basic structure of the program is comprised of modular, hands-on, engaging activities that focus on six key skill areas: communication, enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, networking, problem solving and critical thinking, and professionalism. You can download the free curriculum below and the videos are available on the ODEP Skills to Pay the Bills homepage or as YouTube videos via the links below.
